From Concept to AP Success: Building a Smarter Test Prep Resource

Updated: Apr 1

When a publishing partner approached us to develop an expanded AP® product, the request seemed straightforward.

But the reality was more complex.

They provided an example product from another subject area—an extensive 800-page resource—and asked us to create something similar in purpose but significantly smaller, faster to produce, and within a budget.

This was not simply a production assignment.

It was a product design challenge.

The task required us to conceptualize a new AP resource that would remain pedagogically sound, be aligned to the College Board’s AP Course and Exam Description (CED) framework, and prove authentically useful to students preparing for the exam.

Designing with the AP Framework in Mind

We began with research.

After studying the AP CED framework in depth, we developed multiple structural plans for the resource and shared them with our publishing partner. Once a direction was selected, we collaborated closely with one of the program’s authors to refine the structure and ensure the design aligned with:

  • essential knowledge statements

  • skills and understandings outlined in the AP framework

  • the format and rigor of the actual AP exam

But one question guided every decision: What actually helps students prepare for the test?

Students and teachers do not have unlimited time. Test preparation materials must be efficient, focused, and purposeful. That meant avoiding unnecessary volume and instead prioritizing targeted practice and meaningful coverage of the same skills and knowledge that are tested on the AP exam.

Quality over Quantity in Assessment Design

One of the biggest decisions involved assessment design.

The AP exam includes more than just multiple-choice questions, so we needed to ask:

  • How many practice questions should be included?

  • Which question formats best prepare students for the exam?

  • How do we balance instructional support with page count and budget?

More practice questions do not automatically lead to better preparation.

What matters is alignment to the CED framework.

Each item needed to reflect the cognitive rigor and content expectations defined in the CED framework while remaining concise enough to fit the project’s production parameters.

Once the assessment plan was finalized, we shared with the publisher and their internal stakeholders.

Approved.

From Plan to Production

With the structure and assessment strategy in place, we moved into full development.

Working closely with our client’s program author and project manager, as well as their production team, we handled:

  • content development

  • editing, copyediting, and page review

  • art specification and page planning

  • production management

As with any accelerated project, there were challenges along the way. But by maintaining close communication with our publishing partner, we resolved issues quickly and kept production moving forward.

The result:

  • The product was delivered ahead of the deadline.

  • The project came in approximately 25% under budget .

  • The entire development process was completed without editorial review by our publishing partner.

Our Capabilities and Commitment

This project began as a request to replicate an existing product in a more efficient format.

By combining curriculum expertise, AP framework alignment, and practical product design, we delivered a solution that balanced pedagogical integrity, production efficiency, and cost control.

For publishers, this kind of partnership matters.

It means having a development team who can:

  • conceptualize new instructional products

  • align materials to frameworks like the AP CED

  • manage a project from concept to final delivery

  • deliver high-quality work on accelerated timelines

In educational publishing, success is not just about producing content.

It is about producing the right content, in the right format, on time—or even earlier.
