Five Questions with Contentra’s New CEO, Dave Bailis

Congratulations on becoming Contentra’s new CEO.  What initially brought you to Contentra, and what excites you most about this next chapter?

Education has been at the center of my career from the very beginning. Before moving into educational publishing and services, I was a teacher, and that experience continues to shape how I lead today. Teaching taught me that success is never about one individual. It comes from building relationships, listening carefully, solving problems together, and helping others succeed. Those same values are what attracted me to Contentra. I saw a company with an outstanding reputation, an exceptional team, and a culture built on trust, quality, and long-term partnerships with its clients.

What excites me most about this next chapter is the opportunity to build on that strong foundation. Our industry is changing rapidly, but one thing remains constant. Educational content companies want partners they can trust. My goal is to ensure that every client sees Contentra as an extension of their own team. We are not here simply to complete projects. We are here to help our clients succeed. When they achieve their goals, we know we have achieved ours.

You’ve spent years partnering with education organizations at both Westchester and LearningMate prior to joining Contentra.  What have you learned about the evolving needs of publishers and edtech companies, and how do you see Contentra helping address those needs?

Throughout my career, I’ve learned that education publishers and content providers are being asked to accomplish more than ever before. They are balancing tighter schedules, evolving standards, expanding digital offerings, accessibility requirements, and increasing expectations, all while maintaining the highest levels of quality. Those challenges require more than technical expertise. They require trusted partners who understand the bigger picture and genuinely care about the outcome.

The strongest client relationships I’ve experienced were never built around a single project. They were built through communication, consistency, and trust. That is exactly the type of relationship I want Contentra to continue building. We bring expertise across editorial, production, accessibility, project management, digital learning, and curriculum development, but what truly sets us apart is how we work alongside our clients. We listen first. We ask questions. We solve problems together. We celebrate their successes as if they were our own. That is how real partnerships are built, and I believe those partnerships create the best educational products.

Contentra has a strong history of supporting curriculum, content, and digital learning initiatives.  How do you see the company’s capabilities expanding to support partners in additional ways moving forward?

I believe the greatest opportunities ahead are not simply about expanding the services we offer. They are about expanding the ways we help our partners succeed. Every educational content company has unique goals, unique challenges, and unique opportunities. I want Contentra to become the organization clients call whenever they need a trusted advisor, additional capacity, or a fresh perspective. Whether we’re supporting curriculum development, editorial services, production, accessibility, digital learning, or new initiatives that emerge in the future, our responsibility is to make our clients’ jobs easier and help them achieve better outcomes.

New technologies, including artificial intelligence, will certainly become part of that journey, but I see technology as an enabler, not the destination. The real value will always come from talented people working together to solve meaningful problems. Our investment will continue to be in outstanding people, strong processes, and innovative tools that allow us to deliver even greater value to the organizations we serve.

What trends or challenges are you seeing across the education industry that you believe will shape how organizations develop and deliver learning content in the coming years?

The education industry has never moved faster than it does today. Educational content companies are balancing changing standards, evolving classroom needs, expanding accessibility expectations, multiple delivery platforms, and increasingly compressed production schedules. It is a challenging environment, but I also believe it presents tremendous opportunities for organizations that are willing to adapt while remaining focused on quality.

One trend I believe will become even more important is the value of trusted partnerships. As projects become more complex, educational content companies need organizations that do more than execute assigned tasks. They need partners who think strategically, communicate openly, remain flexible, and are committed to achieving the same goals. Technology will continue to change how work gets done, but trust, collaboration, accountability, and a shared commitment to success will always be the foundation of great partnerships. That is where I believe Contentra can make the greatest difference.

As you look ahead, what is your vision for Contentra and the partnerships you hope to build with publishers and education organizations?

My vision is for Contentra to become the partner that educational content companies trust first and recommend most often. I want our clients to think of us as more than a service provider. I want them to see us as an extension of their organization, invested in their goals and committed to helping them succeed. Trust is earned through exceptional work, honest communication, collaboration, and consistently doing what we say we’re going to do.

Internally, I want us to continue building a culture where talented people enjoy coming to work, feel empowered to contribute, and are encouraged to grow professionally. When our people thrive, our clients benefit. Externally, I want every partnership to be built on mutual respect, transparency, and a shared commitment to creating outstanding educational products. If our clients consistently say that Contentra made their jobs easier, strengthened their teams, and helped them achieve greater success than they could have on their own, then I will know we are accomplishing exactly what we set out to do.
